we chix wonder...how do we protect our little chix from the internet while helping them become computer savvy, a skill that will serve them well later in life? unless you actually sit at the computer with your child every time she is on it, thus inhibiting independence and the thinking skills involved in figuring out how to use the internet, you run the risk of your child stumbling upon sites she should not stumble upon. the answer, we think, is Kido'z. kido'z is a kids browser that let's children browse on their own in a protected environment- it only gives them access to approved sites. mama chix tells us even their 3 and 4 year olds can use kido'z browser. just go to www.kido'z.net and download the browser onto your computer. you can even set up 2 different users on your computer so once you log your child into her user screen, her only browser choice is kido'z. now if only there was a similar application that would prevent our 2-year olds from making random calls to our friends on our cell phones... ;)

SIDS awareness month

october is SIDS awareness month, a time to educate parents, care givers and family members about the risk factors associated with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

the american academy of pediatrics recommends the following important guidelines to help reduce the risk of SIDS (NOTE- always consult your own pediatrician for his/her recommendations.):

Place your baby in a safety-approved crib with a firm mattress and a fitted sheet.
Never put your baby to sleep on a chair, sofa, water bed, cushion, or sheepskin.
The safest place for your baby to sleep is in the room where you sleep, but not in your bed.
Place your baby's crib or bassinet near your bed (within an arm's reach) to make breastfeeding easier and help you watch over your baby.
If bumper pads are used, they should be thin, firm, well secured, and not "pillow-like."
Blankets, if used, should be tucked in around the crib mattress. They should not reach any higher than your baby's chest. Try using sleep sacks or sleep clothing instead of a blanket to avoid the risk of overheating.
Keep pillows, quilts, comforters, sheepskins, and stuffed toys out of your baby's crib. They can cover your infant's face—even if she is lying on her back.

Other ways to reduce the risk

Do not let your baby get too warm during sleep. Use light sleep clothing. Keep the room at a temperature that feels comfortable for an adult.
Do not smoke during pregnancy. Also, do not allow smoking around your baby. Infants have a higher risk of SIDS if they are exposed to secondhand smoke. One of the most important things parents and caregivers who smoke can do for their own health and the health of their children is to stop smoking.
Pacifiers may help reduce the risk of SIDS. However, if your baby doesn't want it or if it falls out of his mouth, don't force it. If you are breastfeeding, wait until your baby is 1 month old before using a pacifier.
Avoid products that claim to prevent SIDS. Most have not been tested for safety. None have been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS.
Home monitors should also be avoided. While they can be helpful for babies with breathing or heart problems, they have not been found to reduce the risk of SIDS.
Give your baby plenty of "tummy time" when he is awake. This will help strengthen neck muscles and avoid flat spots on his head.
Share this information with anyone who cares for your baby, including babysitters, grandparents, and other caregivers.

if you're anything like us mama-chix, taking your very young child to a big crowded place like an amusement park is just plain scary. ok, let's be honest. taking your toddler to target requires the patience of a saint so the mere thought of going headlong into a day of lines and rides and sticky cotton-candy fingers is enough to send us running for the hills...or the spa. aside from the obvious challenge of taking a toddler well, anywhere, is the constant nagging fear that she'll find a way to wander off in the split second it takes for you to hand the cashier $15.00 for the giant, over-priced, lollipop she's now having for dinner. well, we can't give you another set of eyes...or an extra pair of hands...or your money back for that lollipop that ended up in the dirt next to the ferris wheel, but we may be able to give you a small piece of mind. mother and inventor michele welsh created these cool safety tats- temporary tattoos the child wears that indicate the number to call in case she pulls a houdini move. the tattoos simply read, if lost please call... and are personalized with your cell phone number. there are also allergy and in case of emergency tattoos. yes, you still have to push the stroller while holding the diaper bag, the doll she couldn't leave home without, her favorite blankie, her melting ice cream cone and her hand, but as an extra measure of safety (as toddlers are inexplicably good escape artists)...check out www.safetytats.com.

on saturday, may 3, revlon held their 11th annual 5k run/walk for cancer in new york city. lisa pilla, 33 year old mother of three, along with 40,000 other survivors, family members and supporters, walked through the streets of manhattan to raise money for cancer research. lisa and many others currently battling or surviving cancer, sported yellow hats as a symbol of their fight against this disease. more than 3 million dollars was raised and dedicated to medical research, treatment and support services. 2 chix was proud to sponsor "team Lisa" in this important cause and we continue to send her well wishes for a speedy and complete recovery. for more information on how you can get involved in the fight against cancer visit www.revlonrunwalk.com or www.cancer.org.

prenatal swimming - a DO!!!

so there i was, smack in the middle of the first few exhausting, nauseating weeks of my second pregnancy. ...and there they were. the ugly beginnings of, yes...varicose veins. i quickly googled pregnancy & varicose veins, and found that--lucky me--they get progressively worse with each subsequent pregnancy. great.

so while my 'net surfing had made me confident that the ugly, bulgy things would probably go away after baby #2 arrives, in the meantime i had a problem. they HURT. they hurt when i stood for long periods of time. they even hurt when i got out of bed in the morning and just stood to brush my teeth.

so i dragged my tired, preggo butt outside and started swimming. at first i started with 40 laps per swim. then, i slowly worked up to 60, and then 80. now, i'm logging over 100 about 3 times/week.

and you know what...? after a few weeks of swimming regularly, those nasty veins stopped hurting. and i mean completely. how cool is that?

not only that, i feel great. i have tons more energy, and am only gaining my healthy pregnancy lbs that my Doc prescribes.

so go ahead...get out there and swim! or walk. or do prenatal yoga. the point is, take a little bit of time especially for yourself and your health. your body and baby-to-be will thank you for it.
